April 2022 Book Update

I realized I haven't actually written an update in a while, and I decided that this would be a good time. Because avoiding the work I'm currently stuck on tends me toward avoidance behaviors, and there is no larger task I wish to avoid than editing. Ergo, an update, by series:

The Girl in the Box: You can expect four books in this series this year. Eye of the Hurricane (49) - March 2nd, Ghosts (50) - June 2nd, Gangland (51, tentative title) - September 2nd, and book 52, coming (you probably guessed already) December 2nd. I don't know if you've noticed, but since roughly book 46 I've written these to be faster paced, done a bit less of the multi-character thing, more of a speeding thriller, and it's been truly wonderful for me as author. They've been less laborious and more joyful, and I hope that shines through in the books as you're reading them. I plan to keep that up, though I expect you will get a slightly more epic adventure with multiple characters and deep, intersecting plots every few books. I just can't do it EVERY SINGLE BOOK anymore. The original idea for Girl in the Box was to take a superhero character and turn it into a quick thriller, and going back to basics has reinvigorated me. Which I think is generally good news for the longevity of the series.

The Sanctuary Series: Book 11 has come out, and yes, I'm already getting people incredulous that they have to wait until 2023 at least until book 12. That was expected. What I hadn't expected was the number of you reaching out to say, "Please do a Kickstarter and continue this series." Well, I'm just about convinced, but I feel I must warn you - I will set the bar on this fairly high. Not because I hate the series or anything, but because at present it pays hobbyist money and takes a long time to properly write a book. That means the average reader is probably going to have to chip in at least 10-20 bucks. Some maybe less, some who can - considerably more. If loyal and interested readers want it to continue, you're unfortunately going to have to pay for the privilege. Either way, I plan to wrap up book 12 so that you'll be satisfied if you never get another word of Sanctuary, but if you truly desire more, I'll likely be attempting a Kickstarter at around the time of release for book 12 and we can see if there truly is enough interest in things continuing to justify going on for books 13-16.

Liars and Vampires: Book 8 will be out July 2nd. I'm editing it right now. When will the last two be out? I dunno, but I'll get them out eventually. The last two are written, they're just painful for me to work on because it's one hundred percent editing and rewriting, my least favorite part of the job. They also pay hobbyist money, but have the virtue of being 2-3 week projects, so at least they get done faster than writing a whole book.

Hallowed: Southern Watch, Book 8 - Look for this after I finish Sanctuary 12. I *need* to get this book done, to get the series finished and off my soul, but I also have to reread every single book in the series before I do so. I dunno about you, but I don't like doing homework, and rereading the entire series? That's homework. (Because I can't do it during normal working hours, that's when I'm writing.) Anyway, it will likely be out late 2023 at earliest. But it's coming, and will wrap up ALL the story threads. Patience.

New Thriller Series - Coming this fall, likely. I know, I know - "How dare you start a new series when you haven't finished MY preferred series!" Yeah, I'm gonna write what I feel is best, and what I feel is best is trying to get a new series off the ground because Girl in the Box is 50 books deep and it's tough to bring in new readers with that much of an uphill journey in front of them. Much as I'd like to focus on one of my other series as a potential moneymaker, none of the others are really performing in such a way as to give me hope that they could pay the bills 'round here. So I really would like a new series to take off, or at least have the potential to, ergo I'll be spending some time on that this year. I hope you're interested, but I understand if you're not.

Anyway, clearly you will get your preferred series finished out, it just might take a little time. Probably not GRRM time (except for with Southern Watch, and I do feel a bit bad about that, but alas) but a bit of time. So...patience. It's all coming. And for those of you who have shown patience...thank you, as always, for making this all happen.
